Athena Dickson presents the check

On November 29th, Debbie Oiler, CMC’s Mediation Coordinator, and I attended a lively happy hour at the ‘Cashew’ Restaurant in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  Smiling, friendly and boisterous professionals from the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (KCMBA) were unwinding from the day, socializing and networking with collegues.  Debbie and I were very happy to be there.  The Community Mediation Center (CMC) was chosen by YLS as their charitable organization for 2012 and 2013.  Through an introduction from Rik Siro, CMC Board Vice Chair, and the efforts of incoming YLS president Athena Dickson, both from Siro, Smith, Dickson, P.C., CMC will receive the benefit of YLS’s fundraising efforts for 2 years.  This year, the organization’s annual golf tournament raised $2,700.  The money will be used to support neighborhood mediation and conflict resolution training for those who would not otherwise have the ability to pay for the service.  Many attorneys use mediation in their practices, so supporting a community organization that is based on the benefits of utilizing neutral third party faciliatation is a natural fit. YLS encourages it’s members to become involved in their communities. The website demonstrates this focus, “One of the great things about being a lawyer is the opportunity you have to make your community a better place”.  CMC’s  mission to help others solve differences in just and peaceful ways, and YLS’s dedication to supporting communities, is a partnership we are pleased to be a part of.  Welcome to the Peace Party!
